The Quick 32 Sportsman Series top five for 2009 –
Carl Spiering – Third Place
JORDAN STATION, ONTARIO (October 27, 2009) – It’s been over 10 years since Carl Spiering drag raced with a Sportsman-style Christmas tree, but the former pro driver turned in a good showing for 2009, placing third in the NAPA sponsored Quick 32 Sportsman Series Championship Point Awards for the inaugural year of the new drag race series.
Spiering, of Jordan Station, Ontario, has spent the most part of the past decade behind the wheel of a Pro Modified car, but returned to the Sportsman ranks this season with his new 2007 Chevy Cobalt Top Sportsman door-slammer.
“I haven’t bracket raced since 1998,” said Spiering, who has won numerous IHRA events in Pro Modified. “But it came back quick. And racing is racing.”
Cars in the Quick 32 Series, whether they are dragsters or door-cars, use the full set of lights on the starting Christmas tree, while the professional classes such as Pro Modified are allowed only one amber light from the tree before the green bulb is lit.
Spiering qualified well in the six-race series, including the number one spot on the door-car side in two races, at Grand Bend August 15 and Cayuga September 20. He qualified number two June 27 at Grand Bend, and again during the Labor Day meet at Grand Bend, and once more for the September 19 Cayuga event in the 737-cubic inch ERD (Engine Research & Development)-powered, Jerry Bickel Race Cars Cobalt.
His best finish in the Quick 32 Sportsman Series was a runner-up during the Stratford Days Spectacular at Grand Bend August 16. He also raced to semi-final round finish during both events at season final Double Header at the Cayuga Dragway. Both of these finishes were on the door-car side of the Quick 32 Series eliminations.
Spiering’s best lap with the Cobalt was a 6.546-second, 209.85-mph posting during the last Cayuga event.
“We didn’t finish the season the way we wanted, but we’re happy with the finish we got. The car was new, and we made adjustments along the way.”
With major sponsorship from Eaton's Electrical Business (Canadian Operations) and Eaton Powerware products, the Carl Spiering Motorsports team is headed up by Crew Chief Terry Vince.
Spiering has been a big supporter of the new series.
“This 32 series is a great deal,” he mentioned. “It’s a lot of fun and there is a lot of competition. There are lots of top-level cars in the series.
“It will have an awesome future.”
Spiering plans to be back for 2010, and while he is playing his cards close to the vest at present, he offered there will be some significant changes in the future.
“I’m not saying anything right now, but there will be a big announcement coming in the near future.”
